Gas question

I am gonna get flamed but .......

I find when I run 87 in my 2.8 I get about 24.5 miles per gallon. Average week to week driving (well tank to tank, because I do about two tanks a week) for a few weeks I ran 93, I averaged 22.0 miles per gallon.
This boggles me too, my talon I would run 94 and get 18miles per gallon if I tried even 89 it would drop to like 11....
So for me 87 for the win... I meen **** it is a wagon anyways, I ain't racing it, or beating on it... just taking me to my work and to the gun range.... and occasionally the strip club.
so in turn
$2.36 for regular 300/24.5(avg mpg) = 12.244 *price = $28.895
vs
$2.79 for 93 300/22(avg mpg) = 13.63 * price = $38.02
Thus per fill up, regular, dunno why in my 30v 2.8, saves me about $10 two or three times a week at the pump. So monthly I am saving a good $120+ by using regular.
Tech Notes :
MPG Determind by actual use :
Fill up, reset trip gauge, divide miles covered by gallons taken to fill. = Log into book
Driving patterns from week to week of the study data, were simlar in nature, no excessive ammounts of highway or excessive bumper to bumper in either study.
Both were conducted for multiple weeks.
Conclusion :
NA = regular for the win
FI = premium for the win
(naturally asperated, forced induction (turbo dumbasses)).

I believe they are talking about 1.8T turbocharged engines.... the 2.8's are less affected IIRC

think about it. If the octane level in gas dosn't make a difference then why do they have race fuel? cars run better with higher octane levels because it is easier to burn. USE 91 OR HIGHER

the stupidest statement
someone has tried to pass off
on this message board
in a long time.... since APG started asking about dating that is.
No one said octane levels didn't make a differnce. I was stating a purely observed fact with my particular driving habbits and my car (please read post in it's entirerty)
As per race fuel, silly boy, lets have a lesson about what octane really means.
The higher the octane does not MEAN the higher/better capacity to burn, actually quite the oposite.
You are probably one of the people that think a "Hotter or colder" spark plug means the tempature of the spark itself.
Jesus christ, the level of common car knowledge on this message board, esp being it is a car board, really disturbs me. Please tell me you don't change your own oil... pour car.
Octane is actually it's anti-knock rating, being how much compression/heat the fuel can take before it self combusts... thus higher boost/compression engines need it, to prevent the fuel from detonating while the piston is still compressing, before the spark plug actually fires.
*sigh*
It's not only for Turbos same for all motorl like my 2.8 V6 requires 91 and up thus i gas at hess with 93....My 1st time i tried 89 and there was a knocking noise so i changed to 93 and no more knocking and on the book it says 91 and up for 1.8t and 2.8 v6 so why go lower??? Take a good care of your car, you wanted a luxury german car that's what you have to be ready for high priced stuffs

... actually.. I have an 02 Mitsu Lancer.. and gee guess what it says.. Regular Fuel Only.. WOW

This discussion reminds me of the old days, when I had to seek out 93-octane Shell premium gas to keep my Pinto's engine from pinging. With a 9:1 compression ratio, 20BTC ignition timing, and carbon buildup in the cylinders from city driving, that engine could out-ping any other I have ever owned.

FYI
Hess is one of the worst gases (or at least in PA it is) around. My Talon hardly could run with it (then again running 24lbs boost on a daily driver is eh) and my 240 never liked it, my firehawk edition TA (super charged) never liked it, my audi, well ****, aint even gonna try after that many cars.
I dunno where you live, but our regular grade gases are of very high refinment quality, and I do not have any issues (no know reading or timing retard) running 87 in my 2.8
It is not that high of performance engine.... you people need to get that thru you head.
Not only that, the 91/93/94 fuel curve it obviously adjusts wastes fuel, from my own testing....
It isnt a choice of being cheap, it is a common sense choice, Car does not knock, Does not hesitate, and gets better milage on lower octane than higher. It goes against everything I have ever known to be true in my past cars, but this one does.
SO READ MY ORIGENAL F*****G POST BEFORE YOU OPEN YOUR GOD DAMN MOUTH
Thank you,
Heinz
Just because it doesnt knock, and gets better milage (so you say), does not mean it is just as good or contains any common sense. IT is, however, common sense that a higher grade of gas will make your car run better, cleaner, and longer. But stick to the cheap stuff, in the long run, you will probably pay for it.
