There isn't any reason I can think of other than the fact that if your side windows fog up that vent is what de-fogs them when you put the defroster on.

why didnt you just buy an apr center gauge? save time and nasty install...

Yup, pops has a 04 ML350. Actually a pretty nice little SUV for sub $30k.

Because I was able to save myself about $100. Plus, I think this looks a bit cleaner than the APR and I have yet to see an APR gauge that has a perfect color match to the OEM vent.
