Headlight and rear tail light question
Hi: I have a head light out on my 2001 A4 1.8 T . I think they are the Xexon lights ( cause they are blue looking) Can I replace this myself? Where can I buy them other than the dealer? The manual discourages people from doing it yourself.
Also, how many light bulbs are there supposed to be in the rear tail lights? I have the bottom light and the back up lights working. Is there another bulb above the back-ups?
What kind of tool do I need to open up around the tail lights? Again I checked the manual for the bulb type but didn't find any info.
Any help for a highschool girl (not big on car repair) would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Kate

bluish tinge on the head lights huh? well they could be xenon or it could just be if u bought the car used some1 put in the blueish color headlights, do they get a little lighter in color as they warm up? and in the tails yes u are supposed to have brake reverse turn signa and in the left lamp on the top corner a rear fog light...u dont need any tools at all , look in ur trunk just behind the tail lights u will see little access doors and then u open those and then unclip the little black plate all the bulbs are on there....im in westchester like 15 min from ct border if ur close and wanna hand wouldnt mind
If it is a true xenon bulb you can still replace it, but it is a very expensive bulb. Just take it to the dealer if you have any questions about what it is. They should be able to tell you what it is and help you out. Just show up being all cute, and there will be plenty of service techs to help you out at no charge.
if you do change out the bulb yourself and they are xenon bulbs, be very careful not to touch the glass part..a small amount of oils from your fingers can cause the bulb to overheat and burn out. if you only have standard bulbs, still try not to touch the glass....you can tell if they're xenon by popping the hood and looking at the back of the headlight housings...if you see a big box on the back of the housing, you have xenons....the taillights can be swapped out very easily, you just have to pull back the trunk lining, then pop off the back of the taillight housing...
what i'm guessing is happening is you have one light on the driver side that's not on the passenger side...which is probably your rear foglight. there is a switch on your dash (next to your front fogs) that lights up orange when it's on...only one side lights up so that other drivers don't confuse it with your brake lights. but it should be off unless you're in some serious fog.
