I have an '98 A4 1.8T with 140k miles. Any thoughts on possible cause of high pitched whine coming from the engine when in the 200 - 300 rpm range? Seems to be more pronounced when the car is cold.

how's your t/b look like?

 

The timing belt's been replaced at 70k and 130 or 140k (can't remember exactly). I also recently had to replace an upper control arm. I've read some posts that might suggest power steering problem, so I'll check fluid levels.

try to find where the sound is coming from no point sitting in the drivers seat and saying ( I hear a noise ) you need to get in there
