Hood steam...

Hood steam...
I searched the forum all over for this topic, but couldn't find anything related. I was wondering if anybody's hood steamed when it rained? Mine does, if it is cold enough outside. From what everyone else has posted, my engine temp seems normal. The guage rests at 90 degrees after it's warmed up and a little lower if the heater is on.

RE: Hood steam...
Well, it's not cold enough to be snowing...so I would say like in the low 40's is when it tends to happen. I do live in the bay area of California, so it doesn't get that cold really......

Heh, its totally normal. You don't need to be running over temp to see steam. In fact it doesn't need to be raining either. You don't see it often but its there. I tend to see it at night when the light hits it just right and its cool out (doesn't need to be freezing). I am guessing the humidity has something to do with whether you see it or not too.

i live the the bay area and this just happened to me two days ago when it rained. it was cold around 40degrees and white smoke came out my hood. one of the members said it might be a leaking valve gasket. did you car smell like smoke because mine did like something was burnt.

I don't know about any insulation...... do you mean a heat sheald on the underside of the hood? I know a lot of cars have that, so I called the dealer to try and get one, but they said they don't make one for my car (1998 1.8t).
And, I don't smell any smoke...it is not coming from under the hood, but the rain water is steaming off. Thanks though.
