the audi world tech article makes you do too many steps. At least for my 98.5, i did it like this.

Go into the trunk and unplug the rear brake light. You should be able to find it w/o a picture, or just check out the audi world article. It's pretty obvious if you just look below where the light is. It just pulls out.

Fold down rear seat. Latches can be found up on the rear deck, by where the seatbelt comes out. You may have to unlock them w. your key

Unclip the rear deck. There are 3 snaps right where the seat touches the lid, that you have to pop up in order to slide out the lid. Two on the outer sides, and one in the middle. They just pop out.

Slide the rear deck forwards towards you. There are 3 or 4 clips that slide in when the lid is in place, so you must pull towards you before you lift up.

From there, just slide the lid forward and downwards so that it's out of your way. You wont be able to take it out b/c the seatbelts pass though it.

You remove the speakers by pulling out 2 or three screws. Standard phillips head. You should see the plugs for them as well, just pull and they disconnect.

Reverse disassembly for assembly.

note: You may want to pull out the rear seat cushion, which will allow the rear seat to fold down lower, and make it easier to work. This completely depends on how tall you are. I'm 6'2" and found the job a lot less cramped w/ the seat cushion out. To take it out, just lift it up. it just pulls out.
