If you plan to do a system and you plan to keep the stock head unit I suggest you use a line driver or a pre amp, this will give your system the sound that it would have with a 1,200 head unit.
Eather are about $100 but well worth it.
I used one because my car is new and did not think I would like the look of A aftermarket radeo in the dash (for now)

 

Good Luck with the new B5, I got mine with 78K on it and the timming belt was just adjusted. Only thing is make sure that timming belt doesnt slip off or break, it will cost you a lot of $$$ for repairs of all the bent valves. Have fun with it!

 

I have had my b5 for several months and I still love driving it! In regards to recalls, just get your VIN number, go to the stealership and have them look-up if there are any recalls that need to be done to the car, one of the few services they still do for free!
