Right tight, left loose

If it's more then hand tight, you will need an oil filter strap wrench, or use some water pump pliers & crush the end to turn.

If all else fails, and your ghetto, take a LONG screwdriver, and put it threw the end then turn.

Strap wrenches are worthless... get a claw type at wal mart for $3. Worked llike a charm when I was in a pinch.

I agree get the claw type first.

DO NOT resort to using a screwdriver. It is one of the dumbest thing too do. If it already broke two wrenches then a screw driver will just shred the metal housing apart and then you are ROYALLY screwed. I have worked on a car before where just the oil pump metal plate was attached to the oil filter housing. the guy had put a screw driver through it and totally annihilated the filter. Not smart.

Also make sure you are turning counter-clockwise

easiest thing to do..

take a screw driver and a hammer, pound the screw driver into the side of the oil filter.. this will allow the grip and torque you need to get it off. Of course this can create a mess so make sure that you have a few rags readily available.. also make sure you take the new filter and apply a subtle amount of oil to the rubber gasket on the top of the new filter.

^+1, I have done that more than a few times, it definately gets the job done, I'd say it's the easiest way, when you find that you can't turn the filter...gl!
