My 96 a4 2.8 has a strong gas odor coming in through the vents how is this possible? When I opened the hood and removed the plastic around the engine bay I didnt see any leaks but i noticed it was most potent under the hood on the passenger side closest to the glovebox and it doesnt do it all the time which makes it harder to diagnose ofcourse. any ideas would be great and maybe save my life! The O-rings on the top of the gas tank is probably leaking. Which will travel through the vents which is why you can smell it by the pollen filter assembly. Take off the rear bench seat and take off the trunk carpet to gain access to the covers to the gas tank. Un-screw the three bolts and take off the cover, look for wetness around the fuel senders which would indicate a leak.
