Just to clarify, the B5 S4's are a pain to wrench on. The B6's don't have that pesky biturbo problem.

Unless you have the money to drive it every day...An S4 should be a weekend car. They're not really meant to an every day driver. You can get away with it...but you better have the money to fix it once you buy it. Bigger engine = more can go wrong.

I Want An S4
Welcome to the club. If you think maintenance is expensive on a4 wait till you get the S4. Then theres insurance.
Yeah...........insurance is another reason im getting rid of the S4, im 23 with a perfect driving record and im paying $250 a month with a $2,000 deductible, plus the price of keeping the thing running.
I really think you should NOT purchase and S4 of any year un-less youearn $80,000 a year or more and be over the age of 25.

Holy hell! Sounds like you need to change insurance companies. That or move to a less accident prone town.

I'm really not sure where you're going to find a late 90's S4, they made them with the B5 chassis in 2000-2002. earlier S4's used the B4 chassis.

maintenance is a b*tch on these things, ask auditech79. if you're at all in doubt as to whether or not you think you can afford the upkeep on a car like that, then stay away. there's twice as much sh*t to go wrong on the 2.7T as there is on the 1.8T.
the S4 made in the 90s used the C4 cahssis from the audi 100/A6 and same thing for the mid 90s S6. personlly i think these are cooler cars and the AAN engines a amazing. if i could afford it id get the S6 avant. the B5 S4 i would compare to haveing the pluses and minues of the 2.8 and 1.8t combined. its hard to work on since its cramped, its turbo. but then again its ALMOST both cars combined power espacially with a chip. most components should be the same as the ones used on the regualr A4 though. over all id say get it. its just a freaking awsome car.
