If I want to transform my car to a race car...
If you want a race car. Start with a Spec Miata, one can be built and ready for the track for under $8,000. They are cheap, easy to work on, VERY easy to maintain, and can be a lot of fun. If you're talking about prepping an A4 for a track car... Woah man, you better have a LOT more than $8,000. Just think about when the exhaust manifold gasket blows at the track, can you replace it in a short enough time to get back to inspection, and back on the track? Or what about when a hub lets loose and you crash into one of the barriers, can you replace the body panels without going bankrupt?
Just think about that man.
Just think about that man.

Asking the question "which is faster auto or manual" says a lot, with all due respect you need to do a little more research if you plan to do any kind of racing. Audi's can be great race cars but only if you have serious financial freedom. There's more to racing that just having a fast car, you need to know how to drive (REAL driving), and you need to have a general knowledge of how cars work (not just yours, but any cars you could be racing against).
Oh and on that note, if you have serious financial freedom go Ferrari/Porsche.

a s/c'd 2.8 wouold make a nice TRACK car, not a race car. I think when i get out of graduate school i will be starting a project liek this when i dont have many financial requirments and i have low living cost.
