it sounds like the anchor in the ingition key!!
i also have a 1996, luckerly this hasnt happend yet.
audi released a recall on this in 2000, and have done another recall in 2006 regarding the 2000 recall.
check the recalls, this sounds like the problem.
if you dont do the recall it'll cost $20 for a new keyignition switch.
i think you can also get malfuctions from the lights and window wipers.
i need to take mine in and get that recall done.
