Default Just brought a v/1999 A4 2.8 quattro

Hi all,
Just joined your site so be gentle with me.........

I have just brought an A4 2.8 1999/v quattro, with 88,000miles on it. love it, great car, but as i've never had a Audi of any kind before i have a couple of questions if you'd indulge me.

1. It's a 5 speed manual g/box. When in 2nd, when your rolling along in traffic, or you lift of the throttle, it will drop out of gear. Any ideas as to cause and cost to mend?

2. The fuel gauge and trip computor display don't work. Am i right in thinking that the dash will have top be replaced? If so, any idea how much that might cost?

3. Fog lights don't work, no it's not the fuse.

4. should/has this car got remote central locking? The key i have isn't a remote, and when i open it with a key, it only opens the drivers door until you start the car.

I paid £3100 for it at auction (less £300 for the power steering that doesn't work, being sorted with mew pump tomo). Good buy or sell it now before it really causes me grief?

I would really be grateful for any help you can give me.

Many thanks,

Paul.

Jumping out of gear may indicate worn gears if it does it frequently.

There is a switch on the bottom of the windshield wiper stalk that turns the display on or off. The toggle switch on the end moves through the different functions.

Fog lights only come one when the main lights are on. They wont come on without the headlights.

The car should have remote, at least here in the US

Hiya David,
It is jumping out of 2nd all the time unfortunatly. I've been under it today and adjusted the linkage, which seems to have made it a fair bit better, would that suggest that i'm just compenstaing for wear in the gears/syncro?

tryed the switch under the stalk, no joy

Tryed the fogs with the lights on, nothing

If i buy a new blank remote key from ebay, is it a simply matter of re-progamming it appropriately?

Paul
