Many of us use the k&n drop in filter, including myself.

It gives a little better air flow than stock.

They are not junk, they serve the purpose that is intended, and the last pretty much forever and just need cleaning/oiling once in a while.

It's not really worth getting a cold air intake (assuming you have a 1.8t) because all the heat from the turbo will heat the air as it passes though the intake tube. The best thing to do is just get a K&N air filter to replace the stock one. It lasts forever, gives you a little hp and better fuel economy. Autoanything sells them for $40 plus free shipping, I highly recommend this.

I have a K&N CAI/Short Ram for the 2.0T and the tubing does get a little hot, but the power gains from the increased flow is great. Not sure about the 1.8T.

Cheers!
