i have a 97 1.8TQM with about 133k on it. when i start the car in the morning, i hear a whizzing/kazoo/zzzzzz/ sound and i can really hear it get louder when i turn the steering wheel. then, once i guess the egine warms up, it goes away.

i suspect it to be a belt but it was changed at 85k.

what do you guy think it is?!?

 

does the starter motor shut down when it should or is it still cranking when engine is started??

 

Perhaps someone stuffed a bunch of kazoo's in your tail pipe?

1-check your steering fluit
2-could be bearing

 

Could be a failing power steering pump or low fluid if the sound is affected by turning the wheel. Once its warmed up the fluid circulates enough to quiet down. Check your fluid level, and next time you do a cold start have someone sit inside and turn the wheel and you look under the hood and listen and try to pinpoint where the sound is coming from.
