Just one last thing: can't seem to find anything related with control arms in the Bentley manual. Are they known by any other name other than control arms?

There are two upper control arms, and two lower control arms on each side of the front suspension,

if the ball joint in them fails and comes seperated from any one of the control arms=your audi wrecked on the side of the road and a really pist of you! Replace your control arms, http://www.blauparts.com has a good deal on the kits right now.
The link times out for me, but I recently bought a Meyle 12 piece kit (includes 8 control arms, 2 sway bar links, and 2 tie rod ends) off ebay for $525 w/free shipping. You can also opt for a 10 piece kit for $495. My mechanic quoted around $450 for installation (other labor included in that quote).
