Default Looking for some insight on the A4

Hi there folks!
I'm new to the forum. Just totaled my Jetta (used to drive an 1980 Audi 4000 - loved that car)
but it's been a while since i've looked at Audi's and knew what's going on ... there's so many different body types and the letters/ numbers are all confusing. My Dead Jetta was a 1999 Wolfsburg w/ a 4 cylinder engine - it had a lot of pep and pick up.

However i'm trying to understand what it is exactly that i'm looking for in the A4. Could one of you all please help me out?
Here's what i'm looking for: 5 speed (prefferably manual), sunroof, and 4 door.

I'm a bit confused on the difference between the 2001 A4 1.8, the 2001 A4 1.8T , the 2001 A4 1.8T Quattro and the 2001 A4 2.8.
[ul][*] what's the difference between these models?[*] is there any particular models/ years that i should avoid?[*] what years were there major new changes? (should i avoid these models?)[*] what are your thoughts on the Certified Pre-Own's?[*] how many miles can i expect to drive it up til? I thought my old Audi had over 200k on it.
[/ul]

Thanks I appreciate your help!

Thanks I'll check that out as well. I've been doing some research on auto trader and on Audi. but i guess i'm just a bit overwhelmed -- it's different if you've been looking for a car on your own for a while as opposed to being put in a direstraits position where you have to get a car or keep renting (stupid me didn't have rental on my policy) I recommend it to anyone...it's only $25/6 months for a $40/day rental. Didn't even realize i didn't have it. But paying $200/wk for a car is going to get ridiculous...

Thanks Brett! I appreciate it!

Ok here we go :

The audi a4 B5 series are form 1996-2001. In 1996 they only offered a 2.8 and in 97 they offered the 1.8t ( t=turbo) and the 2.8. Threw the years they have gotten a few face lifts nothing major, and in 2001 on the 1.8t they upgarded the horsepower from 150 to 170. The Audi a4 B6 are from 2002-2005 and offer a 1.8t and a 3.0 V6. Finally in 2005.5 they came out with the B7 which is 2.0t or I believe still a 3.0 V6. Q stands for Quattro which is the AWD, they also make a fronttrak, but why bother if it's not a Quattro.

The new V6 engine is a 3.2L, not a 3.0L.

Thanks this helps as well. I'm looking at a few on line - reasonable pricing - but i've heard that there might be some issues w/ the Turbo edition... looking at a 2000 1.8 Turbo Quattro Sedan AWD

It seems to be very reasonably priced -- i guess my concern would be why isn't it Certified?
Thanks! ~ shana
