Default Manual Questions

Bout a month ago i got an '03 audi a4 1.8t base in 5 spd manual...this is my first manual and i have two questions

1. When goin 70 on the highway in 5th gear the rpms are at about 3200..is this normal? if i take it to 80 it goes to about 3400-3500...

2. Being new to manual, i smell a wierd smell everytime i turn off my car...i think its the clutch and all since im new...however tonight i took a 40 mile trip on the highway got off the exit and pulled into the gas station. i could still smell this burning smell, even though i didnt use the clutch on the highway except for two lights...also when i shift at 3,000 the tach is fine, but if i shift higher the rpms spike before the shift is complete...

if someone could clue me in i would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,
Nick D.

the rpms r fine and when u shift at a higher rpm the spike is normal.

as for the burnin smell... idk... i c u hve a 914 number.. i'm in Astoria Qns... if u wanna gtg sumtime i could take a look n probably tell u where the smell is comming from.. but from what u said... its a possibility it could be the clutch or brakes... one of your calipers might not be fully opening etc... let me know.

Hi there.

When i purchased my car in Feb., the clutch, brake and gas pedal were flush with each other. (My guy friends even complained about it when they drove my car cuz when they stepped on the brake, the gas pedal was so close to the brake pedal that would step on both at the same time.) When I go 80mph, the rpm is at 3000.

I went to a mom and pop mechanic store to get an oil change. After a week from the oil change, i noticed that my gas pedal is not flush with the clutch and brake pedals anymore. It has sunk in about 1 1/2 in. Also after this problem, I noticed that my car rpm is about 3200 when im only going 70mph. I havent brought it into an audi dealer yet because my warranty over and i do not have t funds to fix the car if there is something wrong with it.

However, i know that there is something wrong with it. The rpm is too high especially when im going 80 mph. It should only be at 3000rpm at 80mph but now it's about 3200+rpm when im only going 70mph.

hmm, nice point. It could be that because when i go uphill i noticed i have to downshift more and the other day wheni was driving in SF on a steep hill, that sucker was almost vertical!!, my car was climbing it even on first gear. The rpm goes up very high when i stepped on the gas then later dropped down very low once i got the car moving up the hill.
