if it's stripped you can go to sears and get a "stripped bolt remover".

Get the right oil filter wrench. If you puncture the filter it will come off a lot easier.

when replacing the drain plug dont forget the copper washer.. that is a key reason that a lot of drain plugs get stuck

If the filter is really tight, puncturing may not be the best idea, even though it works really well. But if by some chance you can't get the filter off after you've poked a hole in it with a screwdriver for more torque, then he's not only going to have a stripped drain plug, but a ruined oil filter!

more motivation to take it off. what do you think he is going to do.. drive the next 100k miles with the same filter? Bottom line is that thing needs to come off.

Those special sockets that take off the stripped bolts work UNBELIEVABLY well. I had a lug nut that was stripped from the previous owner, and I think they stripped it while tightening it to what I figure was about a million lbs of torque Anyhow, it was retarted... I had hammered on a socket that was too small, and applied an unreal amount of torque to that, before the socket split in half. The craftsman things handled even more torque, and got the bastard loose.

As for your oil filter... those rubber band typa wrenches work really well, or yes, the screwdriver... but the screwdriver will make a damned mess, what with the oil everywhere... I did 3 oil changes this past weekend... my a4, my camaro, and my girlfriends civic. All went smoothly, cept the stupid z28 is leaking oil from the intake gasket... GAY -- SURE HAPPY I WASNT USING ROYAL PURPLE @ 10 BUCKS A LITRE. ... no wait, I was... and its leaking like a bizatch.

Use a pipe wrench on the drain plug. Work great but destroys the plug.
