New to Audi's have a few questions.
I'm looking for a new daily driver. Something pretty nice and preferably all wheel drive, also must be a manual. I have a budget of about 12k, because I dont want to finance anything. A 2000'ish A4 seemed to fit.
I'm just wondering how reliable are the two different engines, any real problems or anything you can tell me about them. I hear maintenance costs are high; but I do all my own work. Is there a mileage limit where you would start to be weary of the car?
Any info would be appreciated.
Yeah, IIRC off the top of my head:
1) If it's a manny-tranny, watch out for that clutch (75K miles tops)
2) If it's got an engine, watch out for them timing belts ( ~ 100K miles)
3) If it's gonna be kept that long, it'll last you like 300K miles (... 300K miles?)
As for the engine performance, the 1.8T is more fun to drive, and it's HIGHLY customizable compared to the 2.8; whereas the 2.8 (depending on which 2.8 you get) is alot more reliable.
If you search a bit, you can find more in-depth discussions on the differences between engines

Thanks, yeah i've been reading the sticky's. Everyone says go 1.8; but I do not care about modding it other than maybe wheels. It's my DD, the rx7 is the new project car. I think the v6 is the way to go.
Also, the clutches really only last that long? I mean i'm sure I can put a new one in i'm on the 3rd in the mustang, but i've never dealt with a AWD tranny setup.
In your opinion, would a 2000 v6 with 80-100k miles be a good choice for a DD or no.

a 2000 2.8l v6 with 80-100k miles would be a great choice for a dd.
i drive a 97' 2.8 v6 with 175k miles and its still running as strong as it was at 80k miles.
it would definatly be a good idea to get one that has already had its timing belt replaced.
EDIT: oh and as for your concern with the clutch, my clutch has yet to be replaced with 175k miles on it.

yeah, the 2.8 is for you.
on 2000-2001 models you'll want to change the timing belt at 60-70k
and the clutch all matters on the driver. i have 110k on original clutch.

if you dont care for mods then i would def. go with the V6 (i have the 2.8 and i love it) as for the clutch it really does all depend on the driver. my car has 121k and is still on thhe same clutch but i drive kinda hard and will probably have to replace it soon
