K04 isn't gonna get you to 300 crank hp. You're gonna need a GT28RS or the like.
edit:I take that back. A k04 will get you close with injectors and a front mount.
Upgrading the turbo with a timing belt job is a pretty good idea. That's when I installed my k04. You'll have tons of extra room to work with the bumper, rad support and other horesh!t out of the way.

The timing belt kit without the lightweight pulley is all you need, unless you just want the lightweight pulley.

Sorry I just researched a bit and found out the K04 only increases the hp to 235 crank hp. So with a chip it's up from 150 stock to 200, and with K04 chipped is only up to 235. It doesn't really sound like a good investment to me to spend ~$850 for the turbo.

I also read that the TB tensioner in 99.5 has been revised and improved to the one used in 2000, 2001, so does it mean I can wait a bit before changing the TB? What usually causes TB failure, the belt itself or the tensioner?

For the 99.5+ A4's it's typically the belt. Don't wait on it, get it done as soon as possible. Upgrade the snub mount at the same time. It reduces the engine movement.

The big oil filter also has a piece on the bottom so you can use a screwdriver to remove it. Makes oil changes much easier.

HP is not all that matters - its torque and high end power - the k04 keeps goin when the k03 falls on its face. K04 is meant to be a DD turbo upgrade and not meant to make monster power and #'s.

not to mention its the only upgrade for us with a tiptronic

I think I'm gonna save up and get a bigger turbo than K04, I prefer not to do it twice if later I need more hp. Thanks for your input though.

Is it better to get the ECS Tuning TB kit with water pump and thermostat? I know most people will say change them while doing the TB job, but how often these parts break? I'm asking because it costs $200-$300 more (parts and labor) to replace these.

It's best to do it with the timing belt since it's all right there. The water pump should be replaces because Audi/VW decided to use plastic pump blades instead of metal ones on pre-00 and they're prone to failure. The updated water pump has metal blades. The thermostat is relatively cheap and changing it at the same time as the water pump makes it simpler.

Hi all, I am also a new Audi owner and a new car owner(this is the firstcarI've purchased)its a 2001 A4 1.8TQit also has about 86k almost 87, and during my first oil change in about 700 miles or so im going to have all belts changed and the water pump replaced (and it seems you guys are also recommending the thermostat). I'm looking to do as much preventative maintance as possible, the Tie rods were just replaced so what would you guys suggest next? I may consider moding in the future so i want to get the car in top condition nobody wants to be doing a drag and have your flex pipe break (that was just replaced too)

Also my check engine light came on, i got it checked and the vehical is "running lean" i was told a number of things could cause that, such as a faulty sensor, or there could be something wrong its going to be checked out by the dealer within the next few days. But I am impatient so anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,
Aaron

Just tell the dealer you need a filter for an a4. They use updated filters so dont worry they wont give you anything else.

My check engine light came on a little while back, and upon taking a look at my engine, I noticed one of the vacuum tubes going to the turbo intake manifold had a huge hole in it. I replaced the tube for a couple dollars and no more check engine light.
