Actually, I had to attend traffic school for a speeding ticket not too long ago and I found out that its legal to have up to 35% tint on your windows in California. Darker than that, you need a medical release explaining that you have some sucky skin issue that makes you a wuss when it comes to the sun. I have 35% all around and 20% on the back windshield and it looks pretty damn clean. I've had the same set up on my Jeep for seven years without being harassed by cops once.

 

Up here (or down here, whatever), if a cop stops you and you have any sort of tint on the front windows, they'll tear it with a razor blade in the center and you have to show it to him removed within 5 days.
