Default NEWBIE '96 A4Q

I just purchased a '96 A4 Quattro and have been searching this forum relentlessly for two days. I am confused about the B5 and B4 acronyms. Also, I have been extremely discouraged to find that there are not many performance (HP) mods for the '96 V6 12V. First thing I am going to do is springs. I like the way the stock wheels look so I am trying to decide how low to go and who might provide the best springs. What should the drop amount be in the front and rear? I do not want to drag parts but I do not want there to be a gap with the stock rims. Can someone help? Thanks.

B5 is 96-01
B6 is 02-05
B7 is 05.5+

there aren't many mods for the 12v aside from the standard bolt-ons, bored throttle body, maf, and a few others...if you put in aftermarket springs you're going to need to do the shocks too. stock non-sport shocks will not last more than a couple months with lowering springs installed. h&r sport springs with bilstein shocks is a popular combo that will give you a pretty good gap.
