Default newbie with A4, bad temperature sensor or loose connection?

I just purchased a 96 Audi, the car is awesome but the check engine light is on. When i bought it the previous owner said he had to have one of the thermostats changed, now the computer reading says that the temperature sensor is defective. It works, but will at times go from the middle to the cold and then back to the middle again. Could it just be a loose connection? If so, where would i look? thanks!
