Default Newbie question about chips

This may be a dumb question, but if I were to get a chip for my car, would a mechanic be willing to put it in? Is it illegal or anything?

FYI- I have a '98 A4 2.8 Quattro

Thank you!

You're new, but please do a search. Most say chipping a 2.8 isn't worth the cost. In order to chip it you must remove the ECU and send it in for the company to flash it. This will leave your car not driveable for a few days. I don't see why a mechanic wouldn't do the job, but why let them when you can do it yourself.

I say don't even bother with a chip and save for something better.

+1. Get an exhaust or suspension.
