My car is making a chattering noise in first gear only. It goes into the gear fine but while cruising at low rpms its very noisy. It does not happen in any other gear only first. I checked old threads and I found that its not that uncommon of a problem. I guess the first gear in the tranny goes out, the syncro anyway. I really hope its not my tranny because that's going to be expensive. If it is I might just say f*ck this car and go lease a new Audi.

 

sounds like the synchro is out...i might be interested in that bad boy if you want to get rid of it for a good price, what with the tranny being shot and all

 

yep sounds like the tranny. i had the same prob it got realy loud after a few years. i replaced mine it cost me $975 for a used tranny $400 for a stage 2 clutch and $600 for install. yes it was a little expensive but way cheeper than a new audi

 

I still owe quite a bit of money on my car. I figure I can lease a new one for like $400 a month or keep making the payment on this and keep dumping money into it. My buddies a mechanic also so first I have to see what he can do. If he can pull the tranny and replace the synchro then thats what I'll do.

 

if you still oew a lot then you might be right by getting a new one. i just finished paying off my car when i did mine and didnt want another car payment. i think it is cheeper to replace the tranny than to rebuild it.
