I am thinking of getting either the APR or GIAC ecu upgrade for a 99 A4 1.8T. I guess most people prefer GIAC - any specific reason? Also, reading the posts, looks like I'll need a new DV, would that make the turbo or engine sound louder?

 

Nope.

 

Actually..that sort of depends. I noticed a very small increase in noise when I installed my 710N. With a chip you will notice your turbo much more than before. Whether or not a new DV increases the noise of your turbo further than the chip does is sort of minor. You won't hear a great difference if you use a traditional DV. Some non-traditional DVs purposefully increase noise but I do not recommend their use.

no it just has a higher or i guess if you listen closely a more of a hissssing sound...lol...do to the longer revs

 

Umm, maybe i'm wrong... but the DV shouldnt make any audible noise... perhaps, the increase in noise was because your old DV was shot, and now your turbo is able to make more boost, with the new functional DV. Just a thought.

 

the dv should'nt make any noise with a chip you'll notice the turbo more. Most people prefer GIAC over APR because they offer discounts when upgrading your program . Which is good if you are planning future mods like a KO4, but both are very similar in performance as per your basic chip setup.
