I own a 2005 Audi 1.8T , and was looking to get a scanner for it , today one guy from my work used an apps on is iphone called GoPoint and the cable to perform a scan , pretty cool , saw a couple on this website VAG-Com, VAG-Com CAN USB, VAG-Tacho , but now not sure on witch one to get , if the simple free app and the cable or something more complete , what is the one/s top favourites ?
pretty much any standard OBDII scanner will be able to read your codes as it is an industry standard that all auto manufacturers adhere to. most will also be able to reset a lot of the codes as well. if you want the all-purpose tool that is as close as you can get to having the computer in the dealership's service shop, you want a Genuine Ross-Tech interface cable. The basic kit can be had for $200-$250 USD. You supply the computer (even a cheap laptop will work). The software can be downloaded for free from the Ross-Tech website.
There are two versions of the Ross-Tech software, VCDS-full version works only with the genuine Ross-Tech cable. VCDS-Lite-freeware version works with most OBDII-USB cables ($20 ebay cables) but you are limited to the things you can do, no technical support for non-branded hardware etc.
good luck
