Default Oil in Coolant Water

Hi, my 1996 A4 Avant 1.8SE petrol has just started using oil, and my mechanic says it's ended up in the coolant water. He doesn't think it's the head gasket, and suspects it might be the oil cooler.
Anyone got any ideas? Is it something they are prone to?
Any advice/pointers very welcome.
Pete

yea, I would agree with the mechanic. It can be a DIY to swap one out for anew one, least on my B6 anyway.

i had the same problem with a vw bug 1.8 and i checked the cooler by removing it leaving the coolant hoses attached then pressurized cooling system. try that it may work for you.
