Default oil question?

okay i know it is recommended to use the synthetic kind for audi. Thous lets say you put the regular stuff. is that bad for the engine or does that mean that u just have to service it every 3000 miles like all the cars that take that instead of 7000. Just wondering!!!!

Depends on the engine. Dino oils are alright, you just need to change them regularly, at 3k for a turbo application. Dino oils have a lower flash point so some might say sludge may be an issue. Personally I think neglect causes many of the sludge issues.

you have to change it twice as often so any cost benefit is eliminated. also it might cause sludge which will also cost you. oil is not the place to skimp on 1.8T's. so ya it can cause damage and you'll be paying the same price at the end if not more. so why skimp?

Think about it this way. You paid a premium for a very nice car. Do you wanna risk your investment by using cheap oil that will potentially damage your engine? I think not. Dino oil and Audi engines don't mix, it decreases the life of your engine and your turbo. Use a full synthetic and change it every 5-7k.

Good point. Use the full synthetic and the Audi will treat you well.

If you're not the original owner, might want to find out what the previous owner used (if possible). If they used dino oil for 80k miles, and then you switch to synthetic, you might end up either with some leaks, or possibly breaking loose some buildup in the system somewhere, which then can travel through the oiling system and plug up something (kind of an automotive embolism/stroke). Just something that CAN happen - it may not, but keep it in mind. If your car was run all its life on dino oil, you're probably better off sticking with it at this point.
