The best I've seen for TB service at a shop was like 800 dls. You have to it though because u're getting the car at 60k. But no question about the audi vs subaru thing. Audi looks nicer, drives nicer and overall quality is superior. I'm bias of course, like most people in the forum :P but I would still go for the audi if I wasn't.

But u're gonna have to do the TB service, so just add an extra 1k to the price - no going around that.

hey, i'm not too familiar with subaru auto's and their reliabiilty but just depends on what u're looking for

if they r the same price, subaru would be a good choice

audi will have more electrical gremlins, but will be more fun/luxurious to drive
suba is more reliable, but subaru's arent' as reliable as a honda.

as far as timing belt goes, i'm doing mine this weekend if the weather is good, it's only take off the core/radiator support. it's not too bad once u take off the bumper.

but a shop shouldn't charge more than 400 for labor, 250 for the kit on ebay

the sub's (i believe timming belt also), will need a change around 80k.

if i wanted a really fun to drive car, i'd go with 01 wrx

or small lux awd, 325xi, or a4.

Changing the timing belt on the 2.8 is a little more involved than the 1.8T...just ask Jest. Most of the estimates and broken timing belt stories you see on here are for 1.8T's. Most of the horror stories about actually replacing the timing belt involve 2.8's. If you plan to keep this your daily driver, go with the Subaru. They are both good cars. Parts for the Subaru should be cheaper.

a4BRZLowrider, the reason everyone is changing the timing belt at 60K is because the timing belt tensioner is known to fail around 60k miles which leads to belt failure. The belts themselves aren't the problem. The updated tensioner that ships with the new kits are good for 90k. Audi began putting in the updated tensioners in 2001.5 models.
