Overheating :(
ORIGINAL: jinnyboo
its not low, and its not full. i don't remember what it was at, but i'll check in the morning. if its not low than it shouldn't be overheating due to lack of coolant...unless you have an air bubble in the system. mine was overheating bad when the level was towards the bottom of the overflow container. but if its not at full, put some water in until it is and take it for a drive and report back on what happened.
how do i know if i have a coolant leak? if theres leaks on the ground?? not always but yeah. if there's coolant on the ground you definitely have a leak. if there isn't look behind the block and stare down at the tranny. if there are pick/white water marks on the tranny, then its the coolant flange
that g-12 thing was boiling until i took the cap off. so iono? would be caused by any of the overheating problems
i'll check it with a dealership tomorrow if i fill the thing up with water and its the same thing. dealership is gona rape you on prices. all the overheating problems are usually DIY, except maybe water pump.
thanks for the help chaos.
much thanks!
no prob

And not to bash dealers, but they will likely charge you twice as much as an independent mechanic who specializes in VW/Audi.
So check the level when the engine is cold. There are lines on the overflow container that say "full and Low.
2. Never remove the cap on a hot radiator or overflow. It will cause your coolant to immediately boil and can burn you.
3. If you are low on coolant, you can top it up with distilled water for now and try to find where it is leaking out.
4. If you can't find a leak have a mechanic check it out and replace the thermostat. If your water pump is going They will need to tear down the front of the car.

well, i found the price for the thermostat, its about 20$.
well i went to my car, put water in, warmed it up and drove it around for awhile, the temp went to the middle in about 7 minutes of driving, then i just drive for about 5 more minutes, put gas, then i drove around for about another good 10 minutes and it went pass the middle and went to the bar right after the middle, it plays with me, it goes up and down and up and down.
should i get the thermostat replaced first? and if nothing is wrong, then i should be fine, if something is wrong i should get the water pump replaced as well.
is it hard to change the thermostat? where is it located? i can't even find it on my car.

if the temp gauge is fluctuating than it sounds like the thermostat.you can get to the thermostat by jacking up the car, removing the belly pan, and unbolting the thermostat cover under the water pump. you should get a new o-ring while your replacing the thermostat

i rly think u should get a new o ring. i mean u don't have to, but the thermostat might leak after u put everything back together. and the o ring is cheap. i think thermostats at autozone usually come with an o ring in the box. u'll also need blue rtv and the water pump gasket.
Chaos said there could be air bubles in the coolant system. I had this happen to mine when it was low one time and overheated too. I let it cool down a bit, then took off the cap to the overflow and added more 50/50 coolant to the fill line. I ran the engine(parked, in neutral)with the cap off the overflow to allow the bubbles to purgeup out of the system. it took about ten minutes, but sure enough, some bubbles came upand the coolant got sucked back into the system. When an air bubble getstrapped around your temp sensor,it causes the gage to ping outto overheat reallyquick, since the hot gastrapped in the coolant is much hotter than the coolant.I recommend giving this a quick try before replacing the t-stat. hope this works for you too.I think you probably do have air trapped, otherwise the temperature would probably rise more gradually than you described...
