Overheating Problems
hi all
Just became the proud owner of a 2.4V6 A4. On driving it back I noticed the engine temp creeping up to the halfway point between the 90 degree and 120 degree marks whilst driving at around 80mph.
With advice found on this very informative forum, I ran the engine diagnostics through the aircon/heater display to number 51 (engine coolant temp). At this point the engine was cold but the display read 90 degrees. I took the car for a highspeed run and the temp went up to about 110 and, after arriving home, kept it running until the temp warning symbol started flashing. yet the diagnostics still read 90. Feeling sure that there was a fault with the temp gauge I switched the engine off - and, oh dear, hissssssssss and steam galore eminating from the grill! I bought this car from auction so cannot contact the last owner. There are no signs of head gasket problems (ie oil in water and vice versa), and no signs of any leaks. Maybe just a faulty thermostat?
If anyone can help I would be eternally grateful!

That could be a faulty thermostat, but I'd say it may be your coolant lines or something to do with your coolant levels. I had that problem with a car of mine, I hope you shut the car off when the warning light came on...because that could've cracked the head gaskett
Thanks fo the speedy replies guys - looks like the process of elimination begins with the thermostat. I left it running for about 5/10 mins after the temp warning came on so hope I've not cooked anything or damaged the head gasket. I was convinced at this point that I had a faulty gauge.
In reply to redgoat, it's definately a 2.4! (2393cc) It's a '98 UK model with 103K miles, well serviced at the Audi dealer up to 94K. I've got a horrible gut feeling the head gasket has blown. I guess this is a big expensive job on a V6.
Any more help would be great. Thanks
