P0171 Grrrrrr.
Hi all
This is my first CEL and I just got it checked
A little bit of background, I first happened this last summer and it was on and off. I suspected the MAF due to the previous owner installing a K&N oiled filter. I cleaned it and it was gone for about one week. It has been back ever since and I have been stuck in limp mode land. I want this problem solved but have been short on time. I have been iching to buy a new MAF but wanted to make sure first.
Now I have a CEL throwing a P0171 code. What are some common things I can look over before buy the MAF. I found this
But I would like some more Audi specific causes to narrow my search
Thank you all so much!
BTW it is a 2001 Audi A4 1.8TQM ~90k miles

Possible Causes:
Refer to our Oxygen Sensor Code Diagnosis article for a list of all possible causes. The following is an overview of P0171 check engine light code possible causes.
Fuel System:
Leaking or faulty fuel pressure regulator
Plugged or dirty fuel filter or lines
Fuel pump weak or defective check valve
Injectors leaking or faulty
Low fuel pressure or running out of fuel
Leaking EVAP system components
Faulty FRP (Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor)
Air Intake System
Vacuum leaks
Contaminated, damaged or faulty Mass Air Flow sensor
PCV valve leak or stuck open
Air induction turbulance caused by wrong filter
Oil dipstick not seated
Air leaks after the Mass Air Flow Sensor (MAF)
Oil coated aftermarket air filter
Exhaust System
Any exhaust leak before or near the oxygen sensors
EGR System
Vacuum line disconnected from EGR System Module (ESM)
EGR valve, tube or gasket leak
EGR vacuum regulator valve leaking
Secondary Air Injection System
Mechanically stuck secondary air injection valve

take out your 02 sensors and spray the crap out of them with intake throttle body cleaner. try that and then clear the code and see what happens. i had a similar code and i just cleaned my front sensor and the code has gone away. you might have to clear it a few more times and you might get a couple of codes for the 02 sensors but just clear them a few times and see what happens.
