Porsche owner buys A4 for daily driver - Have lots of questions!
I have a fully built track 2000 Carrera 4 with a 9FF GT3RS naturally aspirated motor that is too low to be streetable in most areas of San Diego. Just sold my Caddy Deville as my point A - Point B vehicle and purchased a 1998 Audi 1.8T Quattro. I have fallen in love with this car but I feel as if it needs a little extra juice for daily pleasure. I have an appointment at Group 5 Motorsports here in San Diego to do the GIAC chip w/ the EVO diverter valve. If any of you can hear me out, I'm looking to get some power out of the car while still making it reliable. By all means, I don't plan on making this a track car because I already have the Porsche for that and am looking for a good median between power and reliability on the new A4. The A4 has 120,000 miles but just had a valve job, new clutch, flywheel, synthetic oil, fully rebuilt turbo etc. How reliable are these motors? It worries me that the turbo and valves had to be done at such a low milage (maybe i'm just used to Mercedes going a million miles before needed a valve job) I am looking for some good advice to make my audi about as fast as the new 2.5 WRX's or even the 2.0L ones because I have driven stock ones and had a blast for what they are (silly japenese cars)
Here is a list of bolt on's that I think would be a good idea but PLEASE correct me if i'm wrong - I'am looking for advice being a new Audi owner.
GIAC chip with the Evolution Diverter Valve
Cold Air Intake (which company offers the most power gains / reliability for the $) Reccomend me a CAI PLEASE!
Cat-Back exhaust or possibly a 2.5-2.7 inch turbo back exhaust - reccomendations again please
Some good ol' Michelin PS2's because I am not doing coilovers on this car (the porsche has coilovers and don't need them on the A4)
Sway / Strut bar reccomendations?
Anything Else?
I'd like to introduce myself and let you guys know that I am an active car dealer and get trade-ins and new european / high end cars from $2000 to $200,000. I have a sellers permit so I don't have to pay sales tax on any parts so if anyone is located in San Diego / LA / OC area and want to save on a big purchase, I would be more than happy to help you get the parts tax free. Also - I get the most amazing deals on cars and if anyone is looking to buy or sell a car, inform me and can help you find the right car thousands under KBB or sell your car for a reasonable price. I am not looking to advertise here, I just thought people could benefit from my service since I am benefitting off of your guy's Audi insight! For those that post and help me, I appreciate it greatly! Thanks,

hey man good looks on buyin the audi. That porsche you have sounds like it would rip the panties of a girl drivin by her. About the intake, there are really no big hp gains on just an intake. They dont really sell cold air intakes (they say they do) but its just a short little ram job. To hear and make the diverter valve a lot more noticable, the intake will do this for you. The GIAC chip is a nice and reliable chip for the b5 models which you have. On exhaust, it seems like most people prefer borla. I myself just ordered a full exhaust sytem 2 days ago. I got the 2.5" full borla exhaust w/ downpipe and twin tip muffler from techtonics tuning. I cant wait, this exhaust is a little better that others they sell since the system comes stock w/ 2.25" all the way back. Suspension wise i dont no too much about since i have sport suspension stock on mine.
I am also in the process (waiting for all parts to be shipped) of installing a bigger turbo and tons of other **** in the next couple weeks. If you actualy interested in doing something like this as well, let me know and ill help you with certain and *must* parts you need to buy. Hope this helps you out a little. Btw, if you got any cheap porsches.......let me know! lol

Youve got a good start, but your going to hate your stock turbo.. The power just dies at 5k rpms.. This will become increasingly aparent when you get a chip.. The turbo is simply too small.. However there is a cheating way to get more power, and more usable rpm's out of it.. You can take your turbo to a couple of places and have the stock k03 internals swapped out for a much stronger/ better designed, more reliable k04 turbo. This will allow you to run even more boost, but the impeller is designed better for higher rpms'.. or so im told..
The turbo rebuild is about $450, Then you'll need a ecu flash (chip) for that turbo to get the most use out of it...
The thing is that the stock k03 (thats whats in your car) doesnt last a whole long time with lots of boost(stock is around 7psi, your chip will raise it to about 15-18).. Heck, mine was "rebuilt" about 40k miles ago and its leaking some oil.. (which I dont mind.. I'll be getting a large turbo, such as a gt2871r which is a ball bearing turbo, and will spool up a little later, but the stock turbo spools way to early for my liking... )
The stock airbox is the most bang for the buck.. CAI's like a cone system just dont give you much (if any) hp.. The only system that I hear works well is the "carboni" or whatever its called, and its a carbon fiber $600 CAI good for a tad over 5hp..Not something you need for a daily driver..
There is a lot of info on this forum.. Searches work well, but theres some "newbie" info in the stickies...
BTW are you on rennlist?

Chip + DV - good choice, huge gains.
Exhaust also good idea, Borla, milltek, are most popular.
For intake just do a drop in panel filter, k&n, or whatever brand you prefer. Anything more is not necessary unless you go big turbo.
I would say rotor and brake pad upgrades also, and coilovers rather than other suspension upgrades.
That all will still keep it reliable and fun for you.About the only thing that might go for ya is coilpacks, they dont tend to like the mods to much, but that can be easily fixed with updated ones.
Once you start to go big turbo, thats when the reliability wanes a little.Butsome have been pretty lucky even with that and stillare fairly reliable.

I just traded my 01 A4 for an 03 A4 but I've done tons of research on parts for both.
-For your model car I'd go with either the GIAC or APR chip.
-Forge 007 or 006 diverter valve (it's the most popular, trust me almost everyone has one)
-Carbonio intake (carbon fiber intake it's $379) It is the best. Otherwise if you wanna put in some wrench time do the airbox mod. There's a link around here somewhere.
-Exhaust would more than likely be borla or milltek...those are the best sound clips i've heard and it all just depends on what kind of sound you're going for. Whether you want loud and proud or more of a deeper unobtrusive "moan"
-If you want to go this far you can put in a K04 turbo. It's a slightly bigger turbo but is great for a daily driver and will add the most power. It's like $1700-1800.
-Also a FMIC. I don't think there's been much research on which brand stands out more but look at people like Tom Ritt, and Ariff have. Anyone who's seasoned here would be the best to look at. PandaXpress, Acetrebo, Badluckaudi, KarlMarx, Jestnome to name a few.
-At this point you might wanna drop the car a little and throw some nice rims on it
-And if you really want to make that car look slick you can paint the lower plastic parts around the car. That makes it look smooth like a babies bottom.
And vuala (or however it's spelled) you got yourself a slick daily driver with enough power to roast a couple ugly primer colored ricers.

dont waste your money buying a complete FMIC kit. Build a custom setup yourself, its easy and looks just as good. You can get a intercooler for 100- 150 and all the piping you need for 80-100 on ebay. Check out this forum, it has everything you need to know about it. The further in the forum you go, the nicer peoples setup look.
