Default Possible extended warranty question

----Just like to say hello and I am glad to be a part of such a knowledgable and helpful community.---

Four months ago I purchased my second Audi, 01 A4 1.8t with 51,000 miles on it. At 56,000 miles my oil light turned on and my car instantly died on me. I took it to a certified Audi dealer and the entire head needed to be replaced due to bent valves. Upon fixing the problem the dealer could not give me any specific reason why this had happened. Since the car was out of warranty (4yrs/50,000) I had to shell out a hefty $3,700. Figuring the car was so close to warranty I contacted Audi and thankfully they decided to compensate me half parts and labor which I thought was great.

A few weeks later, a friend tells me that he heard something on some radio news that Audi was extending their factory warranties on certain 1.8t models. Is there any truth to this and if there is does anyone have any further info? Or should I just leave the matter be and be satisfied that I got half the cost taken care of?

Thanks a lot.

Default RE: Possible extended warranty question

AFAIK, this was only released two weeks ago. Here's the official news release from Volkswagen/Audi of America:

Audi to Extend Warranty on Certain Models Due to Oil Sludge Problems
Source: Associated Press, August 31, 2004

Volkswagen of America Inc. has extended its warranty coverage of certain models for problems caused by oil sludge, which can cause engine damage.

In the past few days, the company has sent letters to about 400,000 Volkswagen Passat and Audi owners informing them of the extended warranty, Volkswagen spokesman Steve Keyes said Tuesday. The company took the measure after receiving reports of engine problems caused by sludge, a buildup of old or dirty engine oil that thickens and hinders engine lubrication.

The problem generally is caused by failure to change the oil on time or by the use of low-quality oil, Keyes said. It affects 1998 to 2004 Passats and 1997 to 2004 Audi A4s that have a 1.8-liter turbo four-cylinder engine.

Volkswagen is extending its usual five-year, 50,000-mile warranty to eight years with no mileage limit on repairs related to sludge, Keyes said. The additional warranty is fully transferrable.
