How about you explain the problem?

It should be as simple as "plug it in, turn ingnition on (Don't start the car, just to "on") and read the codes"

If by chance you are using a serial to USB adapter for it, you need to setup the COMM ports in your device settings in windows so that its set up on the same port as what VAG COM has it as. The first 2 or 3 comms are usually taken, I selected port 4 in my device settings in windows, and then selected port 4 in vag com. Other than that, it should work ok.

it also depends if you're using the knock off cable from ebay or the one from Ross Tech

I think he is talking about the 3100 model OBD2 and not VAGCOM. Are you getting ERR on the screen of the meter? I think the OBD2 does not work on Audi, you need the VAGCOM. I got the same error when I tried my friends' meter.
