Hello. I have recently purchased my car and am planing to change the tires. However, I plan to only change the front tires which have severe wear. The back tires are not exactly brand new but the thread depth is still very good. Now, if I was to change the fronts with the exact same type of tire, would this be ok? I read the manual about how tires must be always the same and rotated.. Will I run into problems with this kind of setup? Thanks!

 

If you have quattro, all 4 tires must be the same size. If it's only FWD, you can change just the front tires, but I'd try & buy the same brand/model tires as what's on the rear. From what you described, you probaby have FWD & a bad wheel alignment. Get that wheel alignment issue taken care of at the same time you get your new tires.

 

well if you have 2 the same in the front and 2 the same in the back you should be fine. see if you can find 4 used tires. it's best to have all 4 the same though

 

My car is quattro. The bad alignment has been taken care of by the past owners but they just didn't change the tires. What I'm trying to do is to replace my front tires with exactly the same brand/model tires.

 

Changing just two tires is fine. It's not recommended but no big deal.

 

as long as you have the same tires on one axle you're all set.
