when you install a bigger fmic on the a4's do you have to take off the re-bar and the impact absorber?

you do not need to take it of but need to cut. there should be a pic around in this forum about how to cut it. search it, you can find it.

It really depends on the intercooler size and how it's mounted.

Here's how I cut mine for my Greddy.
The red marks are where I used a sawzall. I basically made the middle section look like an upside down L.
