RE: rack and pinion
if you have a leak in the rack, then your best bet would be to take it to an independent mechanic and have him determine if its fixable or whether you need a whole new rack. When i first got my audi, i needed a whole new rack...the thing was gushing PS fluid like a floodgate broke. The repair was like a little under a grand i think with labor and everything because on the 2.8, you gotta take a lot of stuff apart to get to it.

RE: rack and pinion
Ok ive done this i had the power steering valve in my rack and pinion go out and so it made a ton of noise. I ended up having to replace it but i got a used one for about 600 and had it installed for 300. New they are like 1200 so if you say its leaking dont drive on it because if it goes dry youll kill that valve in there and it will need replacement. Id try to get the leak fixed there are all sorts of lubes and sealers on the market for those things. Good Luck.
