Default Rear brake lights question

Hey Guys,

I have a 99 Audi 2.8 Q (Tiptronic)

I was just wondering something. I went and did and oil change today and they told me to press the brakes while the car was on ( just a standard check they do ) and they noticed that when I press the brakes that ONLY my middle rear light display comes on (you know the one located behind the backseats).

However, When I press the brakes what shoudl come on? I notice that the rear lights the bottom portion seems to be on and when I put it in reverse the white fog lights or white "reversing" lights did come on. Just wondering are the top portion of my rear lights suppose to come on when I press the brakes when the car is in park or reverse? (this is on both rear sides...right and left) If so what could be the problem?

Really need the answers soon thanks.

the top section of the brake lights is the rear fog lights i believe. However b/c its a german car they dpnt use both they juts use one as a passing light. U would need to turn on ur lights and step on the brakes to see. There should only be one section of the light on the passenger side not one (top one) eveything else should be lit up.

Sorry didnt get what your talking about.
Ok, so the rear tail lights have 3 sections right?
Going from top of tail light to bottom.
----> the top red portion
----> the middle white portion (turns on when reversing)
----> the bottom red portion (seems to always be on when lights are on)

I was wondering is the top red portion of any tail lights suppose to turn on when braking. Just tested to see if the top red portion of the tail light comes on when braking and it doesnt. Should they come on? If they should then what could be the problem? Checked the fuses and all fuses for tail lights seem to be fine.

Checked it out again and found out that ONLY the bottom portion of the rear tail lights are suppose to come on when braking. They are suppose to shine brighter, BUT THEY DONT!!!! crap. Anyone know what the problem could be? checked the fuses they all look good.

It could be the bulbs, bulbs are not hard to replace. Unusual that they would both go out.
