Default rear pads

doing the rear pads today, is the spin type compressor necessary, or can i just spin it w/ some needle nose?
also i want to know what i am saving by doing it my self. i dont care what the dealer would charge because im sure its way too much. but what is a reasonable price at like a lesschwab or some indypendent mech.

Yes you need to rotate the piston as is returns. Usually you can rent the tool at auto parts stores for a refundable deposit or buy them for about $100 there also (at least around here you can).

The piston tool helps alot but the piston is really easy to rotate so a needle nose will work fine.

The caliper piston tools (the nice ones) can he had at your local harbor freight store for under $25. They're a lifesaver. The cube tool is widely available too at about $10. A needle nose will work, and to make it easier open the bleeder a bit.

Man, I bought one of those cube things, and it didn't freaking fit! I got mine from Advanced Auto Parts, where'd you get yours?

Nobody around here rents the retractor tool

grab the tool off ebay for $25. i did it without the tool and spent an hour pusing those things in. w/ the tool it took less than a minute. i bought the cube before hand... thing was useless, i brought it back and the guy said "i guess no one told you those things don't fit any car". make sure you take the guide pins out, wire brush em and slap on some new grease. i just had one that siezed and screwed up the pad contact.
