I know what you guys are saying, but hear me out for a second. My car is worth (realistically) about 3.5k. I should be able to get an s4 engine (including turbo's, flywheel, and loom) for a grand. I can have a bespoke exhaust made for £450. Clutch- £150. Other ancilleries and fitting costs- £1000 (this is where the guess work starts). The cheapest s4 I can find will set me back at lest 8k, so surely I can fit the new engine for less?? I know that a proper s4 will have many advantages, like superior brakes and suspension, but I still think there could be something in it. Plus, Im 20, so insurance on a s4 will be a kin to recieving **** penetration from an angry bull, whereas my dumb insurance company sees the swap from a 2.8 to a 2.7 as a reduction in engine capacity, and therefore wont up my premium for it.

You dont think your insurance knows what a turbocharger is? Let alone 2 of them? You either dont tell your insurance company... or you do, and your rates will go up. The only point in telling them, is that if you wreck the car, or it gets stolen... you'd be compensated. If you leave out the fact that its twin turbo'd... there isnt much point in telling them... and if you tell them its turbo'd, i'd be flabbergasted if they didnt raise your premiums. And yes, the car would suck without the brakes/handling to back it up.

And didnt you leave out transmission, and ECU? those are EXPENSIVE pieces...

You may think this, and I really wounldnt blame you for it, but, I did work for this insurance company for over a year, so I have something of an intimate knowledge of how they work. Of course I would tell them about an engine conversion, there really isnt much point in having the insurance if didnt. When I tell them, they will ask of me only two questions- 1) was the engine fitted by a professional; 2) is the engine either the same or lower capacity than the original. They will (amazingly) not ask about turbos. All the calls are recorded, and I wont lie, but Im not going to go out of my way to tell them that the incoming engine gives a massive power hike. Most people woking for these companies havnt the faintest idea about cars, let alone the interest.
Handling shouldnt be too bad as Ive already put in an eibach kit.

starts getting tricky when we're hearding £ and thinking $
but 1 UK£ = 1.8694 US$

so...
A4
6,500 car
1,869 engine
280 clutch
840 exhaust
600 ECU
200 All wireing
150 spark plugs
300 ignition
500 air conditioner compressor
500 belts
200 radiator
400 piping
2,500Transmission
-------------------
14,839

S4
14,955.2

I obviously didn't get anywhere near everything needed for the engine swap, i'm assuming custom enigne mounts, etc. but at this point, i figured i was getting close enough to the S4s price to call it quits. this will be a bitch and a half to install... and making your A4 impossible to sell (yes, impossible). would you buy an A4 after someone ripped it apart and slapped a makeshift engine in there? you may be able to let your car go for $5000 USD after this is all done, after a hell of a hard time finding a buyer...

A4
price: over 15K sell.. 5K

S4
Price: 15K sell... at least 10K

And just how many miles are on those turbos? engine and turbos for a grand? You'll probably be replacing the turbos in a few months.

Other ancilleries and fitting costs- £1000 (this is where the guess work starts)
Not bloody likely.
multiply that by 3 at least. Im serious, there are so many things you will have to change it will boggle your mind. You need all kinds of stuff incl a new tranny, 2nd intercooler and piping, wheel liners, half shafts/axles, shifter, swap the front subframe or fabricate new motor mounts...

Sh*t will start to break. Reliability will be low.
It'll cost you at least $6K... thats a low estimate.
