Default serious timing problem

1. the 6mm bolts on the harmonic balancer all stripped... was told a few ways to get them out, one being slip an appropriately sized socket over the top of it, the other was to beat hell out of a torx socket that will fit (little oversized), and of course dont forget spray the hell out of it with penetrating oil...

2. how do i find out if the crank is on the compression or exhaust stroke when i go to reset the timing after the belt had broken...

any answers would be greatfully appreciated

you could always take a dremel/grinder.. and grind a slot in the head of the bolt.. then use a good sized flat head to turn it out. That is if you dont want the bolts after this.

I would personally try hammering an oversized torx in there, if that didn't work, i'd put what whatever torx i could get in there, then put some vise-grips as tight as you can get them onto the bolt and use some pliers/bar/other vise-grips to turn those vise grips.

The camshaft mark/s should give you the top dead center mark for the intake stroke, it does on the 98 1.8t.

+1 on the above.

If the dot on the sproket lines up with the dot on the block (at 12 o'clock), you should be good.

At that point, you should also be able to thread in the crank lock tool...but that's on my 30V.
