When I installed a shortshifter on an S4, I remember the bottom piece on the bottom of the shift stick (2 pieces, the shorter one that connects to the lower shift linkages) was angled. The first time I almost put it in the wrong way. If you put it in the wrong way it'll shift all funny, you won't have reverse, and it'll sit w/all your gears pointing at 2 o'clock and 8 o'clock. lol. If you take the thing off and flip it then you'll be good.

i had a ss in my b5 and it sat shorter then stock but it was still straight up and down with no lean

 

I bought a B&M SS knock off off of ebay and the install was easy despite a few caveats. Search my name and short shifter for more info.
