Default in some trouble, and i need some help

car - 1999.5 audi a4 2.8 manual quattro

Ever since i got the car back from the shop, after they worked on my tranny, about a week later first gear started making a distinct rattling noise whenenever any throttle is given to it, almost sounds like there is a lose bearing or synchro or something. So a while later i take it back to the shop, and they tell me that one of the teeth on the first gear synchro is broken and that i need a WHOLE NEW TRANNY. I find this hard to belive, and this guy who owns this shop doesnt have a very good reputation, and has been known for ripping people off and etc, but he is somewhat a family friend and he ususally gives us good deals so I take my car there every now and then for any small problems i may encounter. Basically im here to ask if this sounds right, would i really need a whole new transmittion just to replace my first gear synchro?....or is this all a bunch of bullshit, and theres nothing even wrong with the synchro, becuase it drives perfectly and just makes a wierd noise....

Sorry this is written out really poorly but im in a hurry and just need some quick input

They worked on the tranny before and didn't notice this? I'm no tranny expert but I've never heard of getting a whole new tranny for a rebuidable or replaceable gear syncro, sounds like BS to me...I would charge him for not doing a good job in the first place and focking it up even worse. You knew this guy wasn't reputable but just to save a few bucks you gave him the job...lesson learned, never do business with family or friends.

yeah one of the teeth on first gear is broken........i tend to downshift into first gear for no reason at all, its like a habit...and someone told me this is the reason i broke one or more of the teeth, is that possible?

It could be...why would you downshifting for no reason that just wears the parts faster, no wonder your tranny is focked lol You sound like my friend who constantly engine brakes, when I ask him why he does, he says because he doesn't want to wear out the brake pads, and I'm like you focking moron![sm=icon_beat.gif] lol

There is nothing wronge with down shifting, As long as you don't cram it into gear. place the gear shiter in the gear you want it. feel the resistance as it syncs up and then it drops into place. if it won't drop into place (heres where you start learning racing techneque) bump the gas to get the RPM of the engine to match that of the gears of the trany.(very bad explanation.)
