Default speedometer broken

My sister has a 1998 Audi A4 Quattro, and recently the speedometer doesn't work. My dad and I have been trying to troubleshoot this for awhile but we haven't had much success. I will try to describe what is happening as simply as possible:

When you turn the key, the needle for the speedometer will begin to quiver, this also happens when you open the door. Then when you turn it on fully it begins to increase by a few miles per hour, but it is does this pretty bumpy (it jumps almost from one number to another) eventually it gets to 160 (the highest mph on the speedometer) and goes below it and stays there until you turn the car off where it goes back down and quivers. Any help would be great!!!

Thanks,
Jacob

sounds like a bad ground or just a busted gauge. Never heard of them going out before. It could probably be replaced without changing the entire cluster.

Is the odometer still counting mileage correctly? If it isn't, the cluster could be bad or have faulty wiring. If it is, you should check all the connections to the speedometer.

Yeah the odometer is still working correctly. Also turning on the headlights and parking lights also make it quiver.
