Default RE: Stalling

Dear all,
Pleasure to be here as a UK member - 1998 Audi A4 avant quattro 2.8 tiptronic 30V - 128k so far.. Been a great car - recently it has started to stall when idling in traffic - is wierd, does a bit of 'hunting', then just dies instantly. Upon turning the key to restart (no throttle required) it bursts back into life... My question is:-

Isthis problemmore likely to be :- a) Throttle housing needs cleaning; b) Idle control valve needs cleaning; c) MAF needs replacing or D) any other suggestions? Perhaps a vacuum hose is leaking a bit?

Qtn for Dave, another UK member - in your previous posting you said "Idle up system - by this do you mean the idle control valve?"

Respect to all, any help would be greatly appreciated! Olly

I still say dirty throttle body.

You can use the vagcom locator to find someone local who will lend you his (cost is usually beer), check for codes and post them back here.

In the interim, but some throttle body cleaner, spray it on the throttle body and butterfly valve working it back and forth, rub GENTLY with an old toothbrush, and wipe out the gunk with a dry cloth. See if that works before replacing parts.

Top man, thank you david9999very much- I will have a go at this.. Am I stating the obvious here - presumably I need to remove the throttle body entirely in order to clean it thoroughly? I think I can manage this..

Guys - finally got my shareware VAG Com installed - codes thrown for the above problem -

16487

P0103

Mass or Volume Air Flow Circ High Input
35-10 Intermittent
and

18265

What's my problem? Am guessing I need a new MAF !!

Try to get a remanufactured MAF. They are as good as new.

i actually have the same codes coming up for my audi, i did a check on the MAF.

First i checked the voltage from the plug to the fuse, got a reading of .8-1.0, the diagnostic report told me it should be in the range of .3-1.07, so that means the fuse is ok

then i plugged the MAF back in and took off the rubber protector and checked pins one and two while idling the car, and bumping the rpms to 4000, got a reading of 1.7-3.05, normal reading range is about 1.5-3.4, so that means the MAF sensor is good

Next thing the book told me to do was to change the ECM, which actually makes some sense, since it isn't the MAF, and it is also throwing that other code at me which is something about the engine controller, anyone think this could be the problem?
