Starting the mod game... some newb questions.
There arent chipping dealers close to a lot of people so they have to send their ecu out to the dealer.. Shipping takes a few days and your car cant run without the ecu. If you have a local dealer you can just go there and it might take them 45 mins. To find dealers close to you for GIAC chip, go to www.giacusa.com and you can just go to www.goapr.com and call them or they might have a link for a dealer locator on their site too. GIAC and APR are the most common/recommended/reliable, at least for 97-01's.
Thanks for taking the time to explain. I am on the hunt for a 2003 manual 1.8T and have only considered that engine because I fully expect to chip it. I am strongly leaning towards GIAC because Curry's in Falls Church sells/installs them. I spoke to the GIAC rep there and he says he's probably chipped about 800 cars with a GIAC chip and has seen a tremendous success rate. I used to have an '04 330xi and sold it when I had a longer commute and was tiring of the 6spd. It'll be a big change going from the 3.0 225hp engine to the 1.8T chipped but I think I'll be happy, especially happy with the MPG.

Thanks. I'm just trying to learn the ropes here in Audi world, its new to me. My objective is like many others - I want to mod the car but slightly conservatively. I don't mind spending some money to do so but I also want to play things somewhat safe. I don't want to add too much undue stress to any one particular part of the car ... but this thing has GOT to be made faster. Additionally, I will be buying w/ a warranty so I want to be a little careful - I know the rules - dealer has to be able to prove/link that the mod caused damage.
