You do realize that our power steering systems use a mineral oil that evaporates over time right? The power steering pumps will generally make noise when the fluid is low.
Did you try to top it off with FACTORY fluid yet? Ive only had to replace an audi power steering pump once, and it wasn't for a noise.

fill it and if the noise goes the pump is ok, if there is a leak the noise will come back and fluid lose so check all components for leaks and hopefully its not the steering rack $$$££££$$$

Default RE: steering pump

I had the same trouble with my 03 A4 just days after i bought it. Took it to Audi because it kept loosing power steering fluid but no visable leaks. They diagnosed as a pump problem and replaced the pump on warranty (had 1 week of warranty left at the time). Now 7 months later I've still been having the problem of disappearing power steering fluid and complained to audi that they didn't fix my problem and now they say it is the rack that is leaking andno oil is leaking because it is filling the boot. Now they say I am out of warranty and it is not their problem. I said BS, i've been complaining about this problem from day one with the car.
